MMA Cross Training

The summary of this next blog is ... I'm surprised my body is still holding together!?

Over the last two days I have really pushed my endurance. Yesterday, I had been talked into joining my mother in her (now daily) cardio kickboxing class! Which I am proud to say has become quite the commitment on her end along with her long time friend Wendy! Who helps me get her there more often. Anyways, after an hour of punching a heavy bag, it was a bee line to the gym downstairs to do my weights.

I hate missing my weights!

Now sore in my upper body I had to endure an hour and a half of karate. So from 6pm - 9:30pm it was non-stop!

As for today however, my Sensei asks me "are you coming to my MMA cross training class?" And as I stare at him I reply with, "I was going to train...". Although he had the mini dojo I had no other choice as he throws a t-shirt at me and replies with much enthusiasm, "we'll see you down there".

The MMA cross training my Sensei has now begun at Hourahines Martial Arts And Fitness Centre is a unique way to get in shape. Incorperating MMA tactics it trains you to hold your ground whether standing or on the floor. Typically, it's what you see on UFC. He also adds in conditioning which works your body non-stop for 15 minutes; I don't think I'll sweat that much again!

So if you are looking for a good workout, I suggest Hourahines MMA cross training or Cardio Kickboxing X.

Terminator Salvation Review

Warning: this blog will contain spoilers. If you have not seen the movie please do not read this post!

As Corey, Kukwa, and I sit down in the movie theatre (again) I personally did not expect anything bad to come out of the film I was about to see. I did hear that it had nothing but bad reviews, though, I do not see where they could have come from because the movie had everything it needed to be a good terminator movie.

You obviously can not compare it to the original two mainly because they are the classic films which brought the story to life. "Terminator 3 Rise of the Machines" again should not have been compared but I still think even the third one was a good movie although it was a little bit tacky!

"Terminator Salvation" is in a league of its own. I was very impressed with everything! I won't lie. Camera angles were well placed unlike some movies where you see nothing but CGI blur, explosions, characters you don't care about and MORE CGI blurs! Characters that you could have some connection to while watching the film. The classic machines you see in the first film and the moment that made the movie for me! The director had found a way to get Arnold in the film without having Arnold in it!

The role was played by Roland Kickinger, another Austrian body builder who actually worked with Arnold back in the day. They used his body and with computer graphics, they were able to put the young Arnold Schwarzenegger's face on the actor playing the first Terminator T-800. It was a very satisfying moment when the camera shows from the feet up and you see his face! It would not be a Terminator movie if they had not got him in there somehow.

What is even better is John Connor laying on the floor looking up at him and thinking to himself - friend or foe? And then of course being tossed around.

I give this movie an 8 out of 10 not comparing it to any of the others but for the well casted characters, the amazing camera shots, stunts, a well written script, and for no cheesey bits! And most of all for having everything they needed to make it a terminator film.

Technical Difficulty

Just to inform you...

For those of you who were expecting a video clip, unfortunately my computer is not capable of loading it on here. Take into consideration that my computer is nearly 8 years old and may explode at any given time, I hope you're not insulted though I doubt you are!

Will figure something out!

Karate Updates

Class of
March, 25th, 2009 - May, 20th, 2009

These are ten of the fifteen kids that I began teaching eight weeks ago at a local city gym, the other five were unable to attend. I am very proud to say that they have quickly progressed and with the correct attention they were able to stay focused on the task at hand. Tonight they have earned their very first stripe which is the first of many small progressions they will make during their lives in the martial arts. As my Sensei tells us in class, "the more you put into karate, the more you will get back". I hope they understand what that means and continue to practice even outside of class to show that they can reach the higher goals and succeed!

I look forward to continue their training in two weeks!

Okinawa Update!

Hey Guys!

For those of you who do not know who I am, my name is James Wyatt and I have my first degree black belt in goju ryu karate-do. I have been training since I was eleven years old and I never intend to stop! I hope to one day open my own martial arts studio here in Cambridge, but first I need to explore.

In a couple of months me and three others from my dojo will be attending a kata and kobudo tournament in Okinawa, Japan. We've been personally invited to attend, which is not a common invitation! When we arrive, we will be given instruction by well respected teachers in various styles of martial arts, time to see the beautiful sights, as well as participating in the kata/kobudo tournament.

This is a once in a lifetime experience, which none of us want to pass up. But it has been a challenge to raise the money to attend. If you are able to spare a couple of dollars and it does not have to be much, please go to my fundraiser on www.fundable.com. The link below will take you straight to my page:

I will gladly mention all of those who donate on my blog! You will also be allowed to visit this page to see the progress the team and I make during the vigorous two weeks we spend in Okinawa!
And check in later! I will be posting a video of me performing one of the kata's I will be presenting in the tournament.

Pet Peeves!?!

Dear Fellow Bloggers!

What makes you tick? What's that one thing, or maybe one of those many things that just irritates the hell out of you! I know mine... My family has never been very good when it comes to dishes. Whether one leaves their dishes sitting around the house, or leaves them on the counter. Or whether it's my dad leaving the dishes sitting in the sink because he's leaving them to "dry". It could be any one of those, but it's not...
My brother is a good guy. He's athletic, he has a head on his shoulders, and knows where he wants to go in life. But what really bothers me is that he has no decency to help me when I am doing the dishes. For example: today I saw that the dishes were piling up on the counter (as usual) and that the dishwasher hadn't even been completely filled and was STILL dirty! So as I decided to load and wash he sat at the breakfast bar right in front of me and does nothing! He reads the newspaper, checked out the music video on tv and then leaves! Didn't even offer to dry for me.

I know it's only a little thing, but that's why we call them pet peeves. So I'm interested to hear your stories! Leave a comment and share your PP's!

Help me get to Okinawa!

Hello there fellow bloggers!

My name is James and I have been training in the martial arts for the last nine years. Over these years it has become such a big part of who I am and what I do!

That said, me and three other martial artist I train with are going to be heading to Okinawa in August to represent Canada in a kata and kobudo tournament. We will also be trained under high Sensei's, which is a once in a lifetime opportunity for us. The information we bring back will not only benefit us, but it will also benefit the community which we have built over the last ten years at our dojo!

Please help us get to Okinawa for this once in a lifetime chance! Go to the link below and donate! Any little bit helps!
